This site is a project of The Catholic Register , an award-winning national weekly newspaper based in Toronto, Canada. Inspired by the XVI International Conference on AIDS held in this city in August 2006, this project is the result of more than six months of work to pull together research and photography spanning Canada and Africa.

Its main features include articles and photography by Michael Swan, Associate Editor, from Kenya and Malawi, where the ravages of AIDS have been most rampant. But it includes the contributions of numerous people and organizatons, especially:

• Dr. Moira McQueen, executive director of the Canadian Catholic Bioethics Institute and a member of the Faculty of Theology at the University of St. Michael’s College , Toronto;
• Fr. Michael Czerny, SJ, and the African Jesuit AIDS Network ;
• the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace , which contributed financially and with advice and contacts;
• the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Toronto , whose financial assistance ensured the success of this project.
• the B.C. Catholic for articles and photos from Vancouver, B.C.

The Register is deeply indebted to all of these friends and collaborators.

Our Vision

“The Catholic Register is a newspaper that offers its readers dependable information and opinion as a joyful servant of God’s pilgrim church.”

The above vision statement guides this newspaper in its coverage of the Catholic Church and its intersection with culture, politics, economics and other aspects of life on planet Earth. Over the years, The Register has sought to relate the many ways in which Catholics are moved by their faith to take part in the struggles that affect all humanity. Each of our 47 issues annually provides a glimpse of Catholics in the news as well as a view of current events as seen through the prism of our teaching and traditions.

Naturally, we pay particular attention to Catholics in Canada. Since the paper’s inception in 1893 The Catholic Register has been a voice for Catholics to their fellow citizens and the chief source for Catholic news in this country.

Our attention to the Church and AIDS flows directly from this commitment. It is only the latest project in which The Register has turned its journalistic eye to probe more deeply into social justice and our faith. Past topics include the church and sexual abuse, poverty and aboriginals.

For its efforts, The Register has been honoured over the years with dozens of journalism awards from the Canadian Church Press , the Catholic Press Association of the United States and Canada and the Association of Roman Catholic Communicators of Canada . These awards cement The Register’s reputation as the pre-eminent religious journal in the country.
